Safety Manager

We are looking for an energetic, assertive, and experienced person with a systematic approach for the role of Safety Manager at the Reederei NORD B.V. office in Amsterdam. You will be responsible for the expansion, and promotion of our policies related to Health, Safety, Environment and Quality in a dynamic and multi-national working environment. It is a full-time position, you will report directly to the Managing Director Mr. Adriaan Rüppell and you will occasionally travel to vessels (worldwide and approximately a week or a few weeks per year).

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Improve all Integrated Management System policies, procedures, and processes including for example the IT procedures;
  • Improve the awareness, implementation, and enforcement of safety management systems;
  • Plan, prepare and execute HSEQ Training and Safety Campaigns for sea and office staff;
  • Continue the improvement and implementation of the TMSA;
  • Verify whether the Safety Management System (SMS) elements meet the requirements of the ISM Code and TMSA Guidelines;
  • Monitor, implement, and enforce new rules and regulations, and ensure compliance.
  • Follow-up on ISM/ISPS/ISO audit findings onboard vessels;
  • Follow-up on office audit findings related to Class DOC, ISO, and TMSA;
  • Conduct familiarization to new or promoted vessel staff on the Company’s Safety Management System (SMS);
  • Review and approve risk assessments;
  • Review and investigate all reports of non-conformities and incidents. Ensure that corrective measures are applied to prevent reoccurrence;
  • Ensure the quality and integrity of the incident investigation process;
  • Prepare fleet circulars and alerts on important safety, navigational, environmental, regulatory, vetting, and Port State Control inspections.

Knowledge, Skills, and Competences

  • You have a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience in HSEQ in the maritime industry;
  • Your approach is systematic and methodical, and you are curious, diligent, assertive, proactive, eager to learn, and able to convincingly tell stories and thereby promote new ideas and have an impact;
  • You have strong managerial skills, such as time management, problem-solving, and decision-making and you are pedantic;
  • You have strong communication skills and feel comfortable in a diverse and international environment;
  • You have experience with training sea and shore staff;
  • You stay on top of the developments around HSEQ-related international rules and regulations, and maritime industry practices. Please note that candidates without work experience in shipping but with strong HSEQ expertise are strongly encouraged to apply;
  • Native or bilingual English proficiency;
  • It is an advantage if you have 2 or more years of seagoing experience in a senior position on tanker vessels.
